The Mitchellville Drifters hold a special place in our hearts for the remarkable women who helped shape our chapter and enrich our sisterhood. This page is dedicated to our cherished Drifter Sisters who are no longer with us, but whose friendship, service, dedication, and spirit remain an enduring part of the Mitchellville Drifters family.
Although we deeply feel their absence, we continue to celebrate the lives they lived, the friendships they nurtured, and the many contributions they made to our chapter, our organization, and the communities we serve. Their example continues to inspire us, and their legacy lives on through the work we do and the sisterhood they helped strengthen.

Drifter Sister Helen D. Nuttall

A founding Charter Member of the Mitchellville Drifters, Drifter Sister Helen D. Nuttall was installed in 2005 and played an important role in building and strengthening our chapter. Throughout her years as a Drifter, Helen served with distinction in numerous leadership positions, including Recording Secretary, Membership Chair, Scholarship Chair, Nominating Chair, Audit Chair, and Historian.
Helen’s commitment to service extended well beyond the chapter. She led community service projects that positively touched the lives of thousands of people throughout the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Her dedication to service, leadership, and sisterhood reflected the very best of what it means to be a Drifter.
Helen was not only a phenomenal Drifter Sister, but also a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, mentor, and friend. She was recognized as a NOW Black Woman nominee, reflecting her leadership and the meaningful impact she made in the lives of others.
With Helen’s passing in September 2024, the Mitchellville Drifters lost a treasured friend, dedicated servant leader, and beloved Sister. Her warmth, wisdom, generosity, and unwavering commitment to others left an indelible mark on our chapter and on all who had the privilege of knowing her. We honor Helen's memory by continuing the tradition of service and sisterhood to which she gave so much of herself.
Drifter Sister Albertina D. Lane

Drifter Sister Albertina Lane was a cherished member of the Mitchellville Drifters whose dedication to education, community service, and sisterhood made a lasting difference within our chapter and throughout the community.
Albertina served for several years as the Mitchellville Chapter’s Scholarship Chair and was the first Chair of the chapter’s Bowie Pantry Committee. She had a particular passion for supporting educational opportunities for young people. Her leadership was instrumental in helping Bowie State University receive a $10,000 National Drifters Emergency Student Grant and in bringing chapter-sponsored voter registration and voter education activities to the University.
In recognition of her dedication and contributions to the chapter, Albertina was honored as the Mitchellville Chapter’s Special Drifter in 2017.
With Albertina’s passing in February 2026, the Mitchellville Drifters lost a valued friend, dedicated community servant, and beloved Sister. Her commitment to education and service, and her willingness to give her time and talents to others, exemplified the spirit of the Drifters. Albertina’s contributions will forever be part of our chapter’s history, and we honor her memory each time we extend a helping hand, support a student, or serve our community.
