About the Mitchellville Drifters

Who We Are

 

The Mitchellville Drifters, Inc. is a regional chapter of The National Drifters, Incorporated, a national organization of African American women united by friendship, fellowship, service, and a shared commitment to making a positive difference in the communities where we live and serve.

 

Our National History

 

The National Drifters, Inc. traces its beginnings to 1954 in Waco, Texas, when Vivian Mayes envisioned an organization that would foster lasting friendships and provide opportunities for fellowship among Black women with similar backgrounds, interests, and values. She shared her vision through letters to friends across the country, who, in turn, reached out to other women interested in becoming part of this growing network.

 

Over the next several years, chapters were established across the country, beginning with Chicago and followed by Detroit, Louisville, Indianapolis, St. Louis, New York, and Kansas City. The first convention of The National Drifters, Inc. was hosted by the Chicago Chapter at the Sheraton-Chicago Hotel from October 11–13, 1957.

 

As the organization grew, its mission expanded beyond friendship and fellowship to embrace a strong commitment to community service and civic engagement. Today, The National Drifters, Inc. includes 38 chapters and more than 600 members nationwide. Throughout its history, Drifters have generously devoted their time, talents, and resources to addressing needs within their communities, including supporting children and families, day care centers, shelters for survivors of domestic violence, older adults, and families in need, as well as promoting voter education and registration.

 

Across generations, Drifters have remained committed to service, sisterhood, leadership, and serving as positive role models while enhancing the universal image of womanhood.

Our Chapter History

 

The Mitchellville Chapter of The National Drifters, Inc., located in Prince George’s County, Maryland, was chartered on August 3, 2005, during the organization’s 49th National Convention in Detroit, Michigan. Since its founding with nine members, the Mitchellville Chapter has grown to a vibrant group of 22 women dedicated to friendship, fellowship, and service.

 

We are an energetic and engaged group of professional women who believe in giving back and making a meaningful difference in our community. Our members participate in a variety of community service initiatives, with a particular emphasis on supporting children and families, expanding educational opportunities for K–12 students, and providing scholarships to deserving high school graduates pursuing higher education.

 

Through our service, scholarship programs, fundraising activities, and community partnerships, the Mitchellville Drifters proudly carry forward the legacy of The National Drifters, Inc.—building lasting friendships while helping to strengthen the communities we call home.
