In Loving Memory

The Mitchellville Drifters hold a special place in our hearts for the remarkable women who helped shape our chapter and enrich our sisterhood. This page is dedicated to our cherished Drifter Sisters who are no longer with us, but whose friendship, service, dedication, and spirit remain an enduring part of the Mitchellville Drifters family.

Although we deeply feel their absence, we continue to celebrate the lives they lived, the friendships they nurtured, and the many contributions they made to our chapter, our organization, and the communities we serve. Their example continues to inspire us, and their legacy lives on through the work we do and the sisterhood they helped strengthen.

Forever remembered. Forever cherished. Forever our Drifter Sisters.

Drifter Sister Dianne Williams

1943 - 2017

The Mitchellville Drifters lovingly remember our beloved Drifter Sister Dianne Williams, whose dedication, generosity, and unwavering commitment to service left a lasting legacy within our Chapter and the communities we serve.

Joining the Mitchellville Chapter in September 2006, shortly after its founding, Dianne quickly became an enthusiastic and devoted member. Throughout her years of service, she held numerous leadership positions, including Scholarship Chair, Vice President, Acting President, President, and Mid-Atlantic Cluster Chair. Her exceptional leadership and commitment to the Chapter were recognized in 2012 when she received the Special Drifter Award.

Dianne's passion for community service was evident in her involvement in numerous Chapter initiatives, including mentoring students at Charles Herbert Flowers High School, supporting women at Avery House, participating in voter registration drives, and contributing to programs benefiting local schools, nursing homes, and shelters. Whether sharing her culinary talents, lending a helping hand, or offering words of encouragement, Dianne approached every opportunity to serve with warmth, enthusiasm, and a generous spirit. Known for her positive attitude, wonderful sense of humor, and willingness to serve wherever needed, Dianne embodied the true spirit of Drifter sisterhood.

In recognition of her extraordinary contributions, the Mitchellville Chapter honored her memory by establishing a scholarship in her name. Though she is no longer with us, Drifter Sister Dianne Williams' legacy of leadership, service, and sisterhood lives on.

She will forever hold a special place in the hearts of her Drifter Sisters and in the history of the Mitchellville Chapter.

Forever remembered. Forever cherished. Forever our Drifter Sister.

Drifter Sister Thelma E. Scott

1941 - 2022

The Mitchellville Drifters lovingly remember our beloved founding Charter Member, Drifter Sister Thelma Scott, whose extraordinary spirit of service, generosity, and unwavering commitment to others left an enduring legacy within our Chapter and throughout the community.

A woman of deep faith and remarkable dedication, Thelma devoted a lifetime to serving others. As a longtime President of the United Methodist Women and a distinguished member of Emory Grove United Methodist Church, she contributed her time and talents at the local, district, national, and global levels. Her leadership extended across numerous church ministries, including the choirs, Administrative Council, Building Fund Committee, Trustees, Worship Committee, and Finance Committee. She also co-founded and directed the Tots Choir and played an instrumental role in Emory Grove's cherished Camp Meeting tradition.

As a founding member of the Mitchellville Drifters, Thelma brought that same passion and dedication to our mission of service, philanthropy, and sisterhood. She was especially known for her extraordinary fundraising talents and her ability to rally support for Chapter events and initiatives. With her warm personality, unmistakable charm, and persuasive spirit, Thelma could turn a simple telephone call into a commitment to purchase a ticket, attend an event, or support a worthy cause. Her fellow Drifter Sisters knew that when Thelma took on a fundraising challenge, she would give it her all!

Beyond her many contributions to the church and community, Thelma opened her heart and home as a foster mother to numerous children, providing the love, stability, and nurturing care they needed. Her compassion was not simply something she spoke about; it was reflected in the way she lived her life and cared for those around her.

Drifter Sister Thelma Scott embodied the very essence of our organization's commitment to service, fellowship, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Her leadership, boundless generosity, and remarkable ability to bring people together will forever be remembered by the Mitchellville Chapter.

As one of the women who helped establish the foundation upon which our Chapter continues to grow, we honor her legacy and honor her for the sisterhood she helped build and the countless lives she touched.

Forever remembered. Forever cherished. Forever our Drifter Sister.

Drifter Sister Helen D. Nuttall

1938 - 2024

A founding Charter Member of the Mitchellville Drifters, Drifter Sister Helen D. Nuttall was installed in 2005 and played an important role in building and strengthening our chapter. Throughout her years as a Drifter, Helen served with distinction in numerous leadership positions, including Recording Secretary, Membership Chair, Scholarship Chair, Nominating Chair, Audit Chair, and Historian.

Helen’s commitment to service extended well beyond the chapter. She led community service projects that positively touched the lives of thousands of people throughout the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Her dedication to service, leadership, and sisterhood reflected the very best of what it means to be a Drifter.

Helen was not only a phenomenal Drifter Sister, but also a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, mentor, and friend. She was recognized as a NOW Black Woman nominee, reflecting her leadership and the meaningful impact she made in the lives of others.

With Helen’s passing in September 2024, the Mitchellville Drifters lost a treasured friend, dedicated servant leader, and beloved Sister. Her warmth, wisdom, generosity, and unwavering commitment to others left an indelible mark on our chapter and on all who had the privilege of knowing her.

We honor Helen's memory by continuing the tradition of service and sisterhood to which she gave so much of herself.

Forever remembered. Forever cherished. Forever our Drifter Sister.
