Celebrating a Legacy of Service, Leadership, and Sisterhood: Dr. Cheryl Lee Butler
Updated: Sep 26
The Mitchellville Drifters proudly celebrate our beloved Drifter Sister, Dr. Cheryl Lee Butler, on her retirement and milestone 70th birthday!
After more than 40 years of dedicated service to the dental needs of patients with severe mental and physical disabilities throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area, Dr. Cheryl Lee Butler is embarking on an exciting new chapter. Her remarkable career reflects a lifelong commitment to compassionate care, professional excellence, and improving the lives of others.
A distinguished leader in her profession, Dr. Cheryl served as the 98th President of the National Dental Association and is a proud Golden Soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Her dedication to service extends far beyond her professional accomplishments, touching countless lives through her humanitarian efforts, community engagement, and unwavering commitment to education.
A Passion for Service and Education
Within the Mitchellville Chapter, Drifter Cheryl has generously shared her time, talents, and expertise through our signature Lessons in a Lunchbox initiative. Each fall, she organized this important program at our adopted school, William Paca Elementary School, providing students with engaging lessons on dental hygiene, nutrition, and overall wellness.

Through interactive presentations and the distribution of specially prepared lunchboxes containing educational materials and dental hygiene products, Dr. Cheryl has helped equip young students with the knowledge and resources to develop healthy habits that can last a lifetime.

Her commitment to educating the next generation also extends to our CORALS. In December 2024, Drifter Cheryl spent time with these young ladies and their siblings, sharing valuable lessons about dental health and hygiene in a fun and engaging setting.

Dr. Cheryl's compassionate spirit had no geographic boundaries. In April 2024, she traveled to Anchorage, Alaska, with the Remote Area Medical (RAM) Volunteer Corps to provide much-needed dental services to underserved communities. Her willingness to travel wherever help is needed exemplifies the true meaning of service above self.

A New Chapter, A Continuing Mission
Although Drifter Cheryl is retiring from her distinguished dental career, her commitment to making a difference is far from over!
As she prepares to relocate to Ghana, she is turning her attention to an exciting new humanitarian endeavor: helping build a state-of-the-art school that will expand educational opportunities and create a lasting impact for children and families.
Her journey is a beautiful reminder that retirement is not the end of service, but an opportunity to embrace new possibilities, pursue new passions, and continue changing lives.
For those who would like to learn more about or support Dr. Cheryl's educational initiative in Ghana, we invite you to visit her organization's website. Together, we can help extend her legacy of service and create meaningful educational opportunities for generations to come.
Once a Drifter Sister, Always a Drifter Sister!
While we are thrilled for Dr. Cheryl as she embarks on this exciting new adventure, her presence in the Mitchellville Chapter will be deeply missed. Her kindness, wisdom, generosity, and infectious spirit of service have enriched our sisterhood and inspired us all.
We are grateful for the countless ways she has contributed to our chapter, our community, and the lives of those she has served throughout her extraordinary career.
